In August 1982, people could see a female adult and her baby in the Ubatuba beach, São Francisco do Sul Island, SC. Other observations in the same year concluded that the Santa Catarina’s coast is an active reproductive area for Bowhead whales in Brazil.

The analysis of these sightings registered for more than twenty years of continue activity demonstrates the existence of a sharply marked area, placed between the Santa Catarina Island an Santa Marta Cable.

Over the following years, from 1982, the activities of the Baleia Franca Project continue, which had the objective, until now unchanged, of guarantee the survival and the population recovery of Bowhead whales in Brazilian water.

Through the use of individual air photo-identification, which identificates the whales from their warts, the Baleia Franca Project, with the collaboration of others researchers of South Atlantic, was able to, for the first time, follow some clues of the reproductive migration of this species in this area. Also, they were able to study the relation between the Brazilian and Argentina populations of this species.
